Tips and Tricks
For Incoming and First Semester Students

Get Comfortable On Campus
-
-
-
- Explore early. Walk your class schedule the day before classes start. Find your study spots, food courts, gyms, and quiet corners.
-
- Use the bus system. UT’s campus buses are free and save you time (and sweat).
-
- Get involved. Join at least one student organization early. It’s the fastest way to meet people who share your interests.

Making Friends
-Leave your door open when you're in your room. In the dorms, it’s a classic way to invite casual conversation.
-Say yes (within reason). Accept invites to events, study groups, and even awkward icebreakers.
-Talk to your neighbors. You don’t have to be best friends, but shared snacks and casual hangouts go a long way.

Smart Budgeting
-
-Track your spending early. Use apps like Mint or YNAB (You Need a Budget).
-
-Avoid the meal plan trap. If you're off-campus, don’t waste money on meals you won’t eat.
-
-Get into student discounts. Spotify, Amazon, and tons of local spots offer them. Ask around, it works.
-

Effective Study Habits
-
-Use the 25/5 rule. Study for 25 minutes, break for 5. Take breaks, they work.
-
-Use the libraries. Quiet floors are clutch when dorms are loud.
-
-Go to office hours. Most students don’t. Professors remember the ones who do.
-
-Don’t wait to fall behind. The first few weeks are light — use them to get ahead.

One Last Thing:
Protect What You’re Building
-You're starting something big. New routines, new freedom, and your own space.
But things happen.
Laptops get spilled on. Cars get bumped. Dorms and apartments get broken into.
That’s why we created Big Orange Insurance. For students, By students, to help you protect your stuff, your car, and your peace of mind without paying too much.
